I’ve written a number of posts about the fallout from Direct Action Day, which was August 16, 1946. Unfortunately, since I was on the road at that time, I didn’t have my best resources on the events with me. Margaret Bourke-White, a photojournalist, wrote several books which included coverage of the mass killings.
Therefore, I’m going to post this in chronological order (sadly, not on August 16 itself) with the intention of filling in the details next week when I’m at home. And then I’ll have a post to cross reference to! One of the things that I appreciate most about writing these bite-sized pieces of history is the ability to tell stories out of order; the previous three stories set in 1947 Kolkata are followed by the 1946 events that triggered them.
